Herder Series Resumes This Weekend

Grand Falls-Windsor, NL – The Southern Shore Breakers take a two to nothing series lead into this weekend’s 2023 Herder Memorial Championship series, after winning games one and two against the Deer Lake Red Wings last weekend in Deer Lake, by scores of 4-1 and 4-3. 

Game three of the best of seven series is tonight at the Ken Williams Arena in Mobile, beginning at 7:30 pm, with game four and five (if necessary) being played Saturday and Sunday this weekend at the home of the Breakers.

Prior to the start of the series last weekend, Stephen Gilliard of the Deer Lake Red Wings received the Howie Clouter Memorial Trophy as the provincial recipient of the Most Gentlemanly and Sportsmanlike Player on one of the teams competing in a Senior A League.

The Herder Memorial Trophy was first presented by Ralph Herder of the Evening Telegram Limited in 1935 as a memorial of his five brothers Arthur, Hubert, William, Douglas, and Gus.  Ralph, his youngest brother Jim,  and Ralph’s son Stephen were later named to the trophy.  The brother’s father, William James Herder,  founded the Evening Telegram in 1879. The trophy is emblematic of the Provincial  Senior Hockey Championship.
